Belmar New Jersey 7/30/2012

I got invited onboard Steve’s 32 Yellowfin to fish the Canyons,
I rarely fish in New York/New Jersey waters so I couldn’t resist the invitation and it was a good opportunity for me to see the potential in jigging and popping the Canyons.
We set the time to meet at the dock at 3:00AM from Belmar Marina and stopped 20 miles before the Canyon, the plan was to fish the Canyon but Steve made a phone call and came back with a negative report, we’ve been told to stick to where we are.
So the guys decided to troll and see if they mark any fishes, during that time I took a nice nap and heard Steve saying “other boats are catching small Bluefin tuna”.
We pulled in the teasers and started drifting, we marked fish on the bottom and you can tell they are after sand eels on the seabed, after a couple of drift, Steve’s gets tight and manage to land a 43 inch fish, had it to boat in less than 2 minutes, he get a hit again on the way down so we start jigging the columns all the way to the top,
We ended up 3/9 for the day and all our hit ended up to be in the mid water and not at the bottom, had a great day with the guys and hope we can make it to the Canyons next time, I have to admit that it was my first time on a Yellowfin and what a ride it was! At 48 miles an hour, we made it to the dock in 70 minutes :)

Had a great time with Captain Josh of Outermost Angling, Raymond and Sami yesterday. After hearing the results a few days ago, we just couldn't resist heading up North. We left the dock at 0330am and had the sun slowly peeping across the horizon when we reach tuna town. We saw fish feeding on the surface and started casting for them but were greeted by monster Blue fish, they are so aggressive the tunas had to make way for them!
We move to another pod and Sami came tight almost instantly on the Saltywater and Carpenter Gamma, this time a tuna for sure cause line was peeling out of the 18000SW. "Get my belt!" he shouted and as we scrambled to have his belt on, he felt the fish doing its head shakes and lost tension on the line...and the fish was free to swim again. When Sami reeled in the line and inspected the lure, he realises he was using barbless hook that we normally use for GTs, lesson learn.
We could hear on the radio that everyone was catching fish or the ones that away every minute and moved on to look for a fresh pod. There were so many boats yesterday and it was tough to have a shot before others showed up but we kept searching for them. Approximately 0715 we saw a school of fish breaking the surface about a mile away and screamed at Josh "GO GO GO" Hit the school, made the cast all three of us about five feet apart and BOOM, I was tight! The fish was feisty for its size but i managed to whipped it in under five minutes. The fish had no chance resisting the Hot's Keiko Ocean lure or against the Hot's prototype Cape Cod Special BT-73XXXH. Took some quick shots and it was back to fishing, we saw many more scattered pods but other rival boats got to them before us, the usual suspects includes Captain Dom, Eric and Jeff and many others.
It was fun listening to everyone shouting on the radio. "I just had one swam right beside the boat!" or "@#$% this is the fifth fish i @#$%ing lost!" or "Oh we had three fish after the Siren and they are still chasing!" It was hilarious! Can't wait to get time off to head up again, Cape Cod never ceases to amaze me, even when the fishing is slow(that is why we call it fishing and not catching) the beauty of the place, whales, sharks and just listening to fellow anglers yelling away on the radio makes up for the fishing. Cape Cod's fishing is definitively getting better.

Cape Cod July 8th 2012

Had a blast with Captain Billy of Maj Ya Day fishing charters yesterday! We were out before the sun was up and already you can see the usual peeps on the water. Was great to see Captain Dom, Eric and Josh on the water doing what they love most! Right at the crack of dawn, Billy called out, "marking fish at 80 feet"! Our crew, Chris from Hot's and Raymond belt out their jigging rods and started jigging away... I told Benny aka A1flyfishr let the guys jig, both of us are gonna raise it up!! True enough, after Benny's 2nd cast and just 20ft from the bow, charlie came visiting, slapped on the pink ocea pencil and disappeared... Fish On! After a little assistance and the usual tug of war, we got it along side and Billy stucked the fish. It was a nice 70inch fish with a 48inch girth, and fat like a barrel! Cape Cod June 2012

Hey Guys, Finally after a couple of attempts to the Cape we end up with a tight line and a big smile on a kid’s face. Igor and his son Genia joined us from Russia for a taste of Bluefin tuna; we had fished for 2 consecutive days to see our lures getting boiled at it twice. Captain Josh put up the extra mileage and sealed the deal in the early AM. we saw some fishes working on the surface and we made the first cast with our legs shaking from the excitement, as soon the lures touched the water the fish disappeared, we then spotted them again and Captain Josh steered to put us on the right position to see Genia’s lures getting inhaled, the fish took a Local Standard Dive Bait 210HR, he set the hook and with a bit of help he landed a nice 68 inch fish, God had smiled at us at 5:50am, we will be back at it tomorrow and hopefully we will have a nice tuna story to tell you :) Enjoy the pictures :) Tackle used: Rods: Race Point 200,250 & 300, Hot's tide Lez GT77XH, Reels: Shimano Stella, Daiwa Saltiga Dogfight, Line: Sunline, Varivas, Jerry Brown, Shout Sasame PE Line. Musandam Oman April 2012

When I set foot on the plane, I realized how long my absence is going to be, Leaving 2 young boys behind and a pregnant woman for 23 days is a bit hectic, I consider my self very lucky as I barely hear my wife complain, however the guilt for being away for so long will always surround me and made me realize how much I miss being around my family and my good friends, The problem is that I can’t stand still without wetting a line; I guess my fishing obsession is getting worst. This trip was organized right after my first trip to Southern Oman in April 2011, Joining me on this trip is Yagara-san from California and Matthew Born from Dubai, Matt fished with us last year and we had a blast fishing with him, I am very keen to share a ride with him on the water as there is always fun and good laugh between him and Nick from Ocean Active. I also fished with Yagara-san, on many occasion his knowledge and help is beyond my expectation, The plan was to fish Southern Oman for 5 days with the first group but ****** Nature is raising the red flag against us! Prior to my departure from the US I received a call from Nick informing me of bad weather but giving us an alternative to fish the ‘North Musandam’ Upon my arrival we made the decision based on the weather and with the help of Ocean Active we made it happen, I have to say that no monster have been caught but the fun and the great time we had – ‘priceless’, we caught many species from GT’s to AJ, to sailfish, spangled emperor, Mackerel, Queen fish, big eye, Yellowfin tuna, we manage couple of descent size fish and a taste of Musandam great sea current, which make the 25kg pull like a 50kg. The water was so clear and most of the fish been caught on a strong current, baits were everywhere, tons of bait at certain spot with busting long fin tuna all over that makes you pull the rest of the hair you have on your head, the most difficult fish to catch period! We sure missed a couple of fish and at a certain time my line got bitten by a shark trying to attack the lure that had a GT on it, minor lure losses and failed tackle to mention but the funniest of all is when I get smoked at a certain spot and my line get shaved to lose a Moutoukenmaru prototype lure, the odds and the luck showed up after 15 minutes and while we are ¼ miles away from where we hooked that fish and lost the lure. Mattew shouted, isn’t that your lure, pointing 3 feet away from the boat, how lucky I am, in this big ocean my lure surfaced 3 feet away from the boat, I pick it up and started cracking up on what to be the oddest things that could happen on the water, amazing how luck can smile at you :) Sailfish were thick and it was so fun to see them airborne, giving us the signal to hit the throttle and we were not disappointed, we had many hook up until Nick made it happen, the sailfish took his lure 2 feet away from the boat while he is shouting grab the leader, Captain Damon ran to him to back up the drag and make him work a bit :D After a couple of run and some acrobatic movement the fish settled down and Nick manage to grab it to have a lap pictures :) This is my 10th trip to Musandam for the past 5 years and I still haven’t get enough from this place, there is always something special that happens on this magical place, I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Musandam is one of my favorite GT spot. As I am writing down the report the weather seems about to give us a break so hopefully Southern Oman will become reality in another couple of days.
